ACH Rule Update – Effective June 22, 2026
Starting June 22, 2026, NACHA is rolling out a new rule for businesses that send ACH payments.
In simple terms, this means your business needs to have processes in place to help spot and prevent ACH fraud.
What’s the focus?
The rule is aimed at reducing two common types of fraud:
- Unauthorized transactions (someone initiates a payment without permission)
- “False pretenses” fraud (payments sent because someone was tricked)
Examples include:
- Business Email Compromise (BEC)
- Vendor or payroll impersonation
What you’ll need to do
If your business sends ACH payments (like payroll or vendor payments), you’ll need to:
- Put basic fraud monitoring procedures in place
- Take a risk-based approach (focus more on higher-risk transactions)
- Review and update your processes at least once a year
Who this applies to
All AHB business customers who originate ACH transactions.
Is this just AHB?
No — this is a nationwide NACHA rule that applies to all financial institutions and their business customers.
Do I need special software?
No. You can meet the requirement in a way that works for your business, including:
- Internal controls and procedures
- Features within your accounting or payroll system
- Third-party tools (if you choose)
Does this change liability?
No — it doesn’t change who is responsible for fraud losses.
It simply requires stronger safeguards to help prevent them.
Keep it simple
Good fraud prevention can look like:
- Having two people approve payments
- Verifying changes to payment info (don’t trust email alone)
- Watching for unusual transaction activity
- Using MFA and limiting access
Bottom line
If you send ACH payments, you need to be actively monitoring for fraud and have a plan in place before June 22, 2026.
